ONE OF FIFTY SITUATIONS

“I struggle to notice what I need.”

Needs are quiet. Yours have not been given a place to be asked.

What this can look like

After repeated interruptions, you feel irritated. Each time you return to what you were doing, another question arrives. It is tempting to conclude, "I need everyone to leave me alone." That may be one workable preference, but the feeling itself has not yet selected a request. You might need a clearer agreement about questions, help with the work, a pause or simply fewer interruptions for a while. Several ordinary possibilities can remain open without assuming there is one hidden need you must uncover.

A feeling is information about your present experience. It is not a complete instruction for what another person should do. Irritation after interruptions can make the interruptions worth noticing, but it does not establish that the people asking questions are inconsiderate or that isolation is the only solution. The situation may contain legitimate requests, unclear roles or a task that is difficult even in silence. You can take the feeling seriously while keeping the explanation and the proposed response provisional. Respecting an experience does not require treating its first interpretation as fact.
