ONE OF FIFTY SITUATIONS

“I struggle to explain what is difficult for me.”

You are not hard to understand. The difficulty has not yet been given a shape others can hold.

What this can look like

The deadline is Friday, and someone asks why it is difficult. You begin with "I have always struggled to get things done," then remember six other examples that seem necessary to explain the first one. Soon the question about Friday has become a question about your whole character. There may be a long and complicated history behind this moment. You do not have to present that history to describe the obstacle in front of you. One scene can give the listener something more useful than a verdict about your life.

Imagine the deadline is for a short report. The main draft exists, but two figures have not arrived, and you are unsure whether the final version may contain estimates. "I am terrible with deadlines" and "I cannot finish the figures until I know whether estimates are allowed" describe different problems. The first invites reassurance, judgment or advice about personal discipline. The second identifies a decision someone might actually be able to make. Neither sentence contains every relevant fact, but they leave the listener with very different work to do.
